Akanani is a Shangaan word meaning “let us build together”. It was previously known as the Street Ministry and started its work with the adult homeless communities of the inner city in 1997.
Homeless people are generally marginalized because of society’s stereotypes, a lack of policy that includes and affirms homeless people, and the lack of appropriate programmes and services to assist them. |

Yet, homeless people are not hopeless. Often their stories of hope that are alive on the streets are not told and their successful re-integration into society not heard.
Akanani seeks to create spaces in which homeless people can re-connect, recover their dignity, and access the resources that will re-integrate them into communities. At the same time Akanani wants to tell the stories of homeless people—both stories of struggle but definitely also the amazing stories of hope. |
